De naam Gini Koch hebben jullie hier al meerdere keren zien langskomen vermits ik helemaal weg ben van haar Alien-serie. Jammer genoeg is deze nog niet naar het Nederlands vertaald waardoor heel wat mensen nog niet de kans kregen om haar boeken én personages te leren kennen. Ik blijf hopen dat daar ooit verandering in komt én wie weet … misschien helpt dit Auteurs Vriendenboek daar wel bij. Jaja, je leest het goed. International Business, vele manen geleden.

Heb je naast lezen nog andere hobby’s?
Laten ze je nog andere dingen doen als schrijven? LOL Slapen! Slapen is mijn hobby, want dat komt er de laatste dagen veel te weinig van.

Je favoriete eten:
Te veel om op te noemen. Maar als er iemand trakteert is ze direct te vinden voor sushi en/of gebraden eend.

Je lievelingskleur: (Zwartraafje: Ik dacht dat ik deze wist vermits we beiden van paar lijken te houden maar …)
LOL Eigenlijk heb je het mis. Ik hou immers niet van paars op de manier die iedereen lijkt te denken. Ik deelde verschillende foto’s van lavendel en andere paarse afbeeldingen tijdens het schrijven van Alien Separation omdat die pasten bij de wereld waarin Kitty zich toen bevond. Ik vind afbeeldingen van lavendel erg rustgevend. Maar mijn favoriete kleuren zijn waarschijnlijk zwart, wit, grijs en roos. Ik hou ook van paars en blauw. Eigenlijk ben ik tegen geen enkele kleur. Ik ben net pro-kleur.

Verzamel je (naast boeken) iets?
Pluche dieren (waarvoor ik eigenlijk geen plaats heb maar dat lijkt me niet tegen te houden); zoveel asiel dieren als de echtgenoot toestaat (momenteel 3 honden en 2 katten; schrijfgerei, sieraden, comics en nog geen aantal dingen die ik nu ongetwijfeld vergeet te melden.

Welk boek staat al het langste in je kast?
LOL babe, ik ben geen lief jong ding meer. Ik kan me niet meer herinneren wat het eerste boek was dat ik kocht en ik heb geen idee of ik het al dan niet nog heb. Het eerste boek dat me in vervoering bracht als een jong kind was The Phantom Tolbooth.

Heb je ooit een heuse miskoop gedaan? Een boek dat veelbelovend leek maar waarvan je het geld bij nader inzien liever aan een ander boek had gespendeerd?
Natuurlijk, maar dat geldt voor alle kunst.

Luister je naar audio-boeken?
Nee. Ik heb er niets tegen, maar ik moet tijdens het schrijven en autorijden naar muziek kunnen luisteren. Audio boeken zorgen ervoor dat ik niet kan ‘denken’ en daardoor kan ik ook niets creëeren. Ik ben echter wel van plan om naar de audio versie van Alexander Outland: Space Pirate (een boek dat ze schreef onder de naam G.J.Koch schreef) luisteren. De stem die het boek inleest is geweldig en ze moet het audioboek bespreken wanneer ze binnenkort verder werkt aan het volgende boek in deze serie, Alexander Outland: Space Avenger.

Heb je een favoriet genre?
Nope. Ik hou van verscheidenheid. Mijn eerste liefde was mysterie, dan humor, biografie / autobiografie, horror, science fiction en vervolgens fantasie. Maar ik lees in alle genres.

Welk boek staat er momenteel bovenaan je wishlist?
Eén van mijn eigen boeken in de New York Times Bestseller List zien verschijnen staat bovenaan mijn wishlist. Een boeken wenslijst heb ik niet echt. Als ik een boek wil dan koop ik het meteen.

Voor welke boekenkast-indeling heb jij gekozen?
Geen. We zijn niet echt nette mensen. We proberen het wel, maar weten er niet in te slagen. In een perfecte wereld zou het zien zoals in de boekenwinkel: per genre en alfabetisch op auteur.

Lees je veel ebooks of voornamelijk fysieke boeken?
Uitsluitend fysieke boeken. Grotendeels doordat ik 18u per dag al schrijvend achter de computer doorbreng. Hierdoor kan ik nog maar zelden een digitaal boek lezen zonder dat ik de neiging krijg om het te gaan verbeteren waardoor het leesplezier helemaal verdwijnt.

Heb je een favoriet boek?
Touched by an Alien, omdat het de start van haar carrière betekende. Er zijn teveel boeken van andere auteurs goed dus daar kan ze onmogelijk één van selecteren.

Wat is de mooiste cover die je in je collectie hebt?
Mijn eigen boeken, omdat Dan dos Santos, Lindsey Look, John Stanko en Lisa Dovichi geweldige cover artiesten zijn. (Zwartraafje: Daar is trouwens geen woord van gelogen – elke cover uit de Alien-serie die ik in mijn boekenkast heb staan ziet er uit als een kunstwerk.)

 

Heb je enig idee hoeveel boeken je bezit? <100, >100, >200, >300, …?
Meer dan 1000. Ongetwijfeld meer dan 1000 boeken.

Wat is je laatst gekochte boek?
Dat kan ik me niet herinneren. Ongetwijfeld iets van één van mijn auteursvrienden.

Weet je nog welk boek er voor zorgde dat je graag las?
Elk boek, zelfs diegene die ik niet leuk vond.

Wie was je favoriete auteur toen je kind was?
O.Henry en Arthur Conan Doyle op de voet gevolgd door Madeleine L’Engle.

Van welke auteur heb je de meeste boeken in je kast(en)?
Terry Pratchett (al ben ik hem ondertussen wel aan het inhalen 🙂 )

Welk boek heb je al meer dan drie keer gelezen?
Alle boeken van Pratchett, de eerste 20 Discworld boeken, Good Omens, alle Sherlock Holmes boeken, Chips off the Old Benchley, alle boeken van O.Henry, The Phantom Tollbooth, A Wrinkle in Time. Zonder twijfel meer dan deze. Ik ben een zeer snelle lezer en als ik van een boek hou dan wil ik het ook herlezen.

Is er een boek dat je tegen je zin hebt uitgelezen?
Nee. Ik lees niets dat er niet voor zorgt dat ik wil verderlezen. Zo heb ik bijvoorbeeld nooit Tolkien gelezen omdat ik niet van zijn schrijfstijl hou. Hetzelfde telt voor de boeken van Larry McMurtry. Ik beschouw hen beide als genieën maar ik kan hun werk niet lezen.

Mocht het mogelijk zijn om een fictief gadget uit een boek te kiezen … Wat zou je dan kiezen en waarom?
Ik wil geen gadget – ik wil een superkracht uit mijn eigen serie. Ik wil hyperspeed omdat ik het nodig heb. LOL

Is er enige kans dat je naar een Convention in België zou komen?
Mocht een Con me betalen om naar daar te komen dan zou ik dat direct doen. Tijdens mijn enige trip naar Europa brachten we slechts één middag door in België en ik zou het fantastisch vinden om meer te zien dan één mooie kleine stad met een geweldige bakkerij. Jammer genoeg kan ik het me niet permitteren om op eigen kosten naar Europa te trekken. Ik zou het echter geweldig vinden om naar Europese Cons te gaan, vertel het dus maar voort! 🙂

Een tijdje geleden stemde ik ervoor om jouw boeken verfilmd te zien worden. Indien dit werkelijkheid zou worden heb je dan bepaalde acteurs in gedachten om jouw personages te spelen?
Hier heb je het antwoord van de auteur en het zakelijke antwoord. Het laatste is: iedere acteur en/of actrice die er voor kan zorgen dat het een sterke film wordt die aanslaat bij het publiek. Als auteur is het vooral afhankelijk van wie het beste bij het personage past. Op mijn Pinterest-pagina kan je terugvinden wie ik op dit moment voor ogen heb. (Zwartraafje: Dat heb ik dus net gedaan en bij sommige personages klopte het beeld echt met wat ik voor ogen had. Tito bijvoorbeeld, maar ook Kevin, de Gower-familie, Kitty, Chuckie, … oh én mijn favoriet de acteur die ze voor Malcolm Buchanan heeft uitgekozen.)

Wat is je favoriete gedeelte van het schrijfproces? Het beginstadium waar de verhaallijn haar opzet krijgt en personages worden geïntroduceerd of het einde waar alle verhaallijnen mooi samenkomen tot één geheel?
Alles. Ik hou van schrijven. Ik hou zelfs van het redigeren. Als ik toch een keuze moet maken dan kies ik voor het moment waarop ik plots bedenk ‘Aha! Dat is wat er aan de hand is!’ En dat is meestal ergens in het midden. LOL

Welk boek lees je momenteel?
Op dit moment ben ik comics aan het lezen. Een inhaalmanoeuvre bij de DC Rebirth’s serie. Ik heb helaas heel weinig tijd om te lezen door deadlines waarvan ik er gelukkig meerdere heb lopen. Zo loop ik ook achter op Seanan McGuire’s Oktober Day-serie die wordt uitgegeven bij DAW Books en waar ik echt van hou. Jammer genoeg heb ik geen overvloed aan vrije tijd want ik zou deze reeks echt willen bijlezen. (Mocht je deze serie nog niet gelezen hebben … dan moet je er echt aan beginnen.)

(Zwartraafje: Tijdens de research voor een eerdere blogpost ontdekte ik dat Gini fan is van deze serie en daardoor staat het eerste deel uit deze reeks nu al even op me te wachten.)

Do you have any other hobbies than writing?
They let you do things other than write?!? LOL Sleeping. Sleeping is my hobby because I get to do so little of it these days.

What’s your favorite food?
Too many to list. But if someone’s buying, sushi and/or roast duckling.

What’s your favorite colour? ? (Zwartraafje: I thought I knew this one since we both seem to love purple)
LOL, actually, you don’t because I don’t love purple in the way everyone thinks I do. I was posting a lot of lavender and purple pics when I was writing Alien Separation because of the world Kitty was on. And I find pictures of lavender very soothing. But my favorite colors these days are probably black, white, gray, and pink. I like purple, though, and blue, too. I’m really not against any of the colors. I’m pro-color, me.

Do you collect anything other than books?
Plush, aka stuffed animals (for which I have no more room but that doesn’t stop me); as many rescue animals as the hubs will allow (currently 3 dogs and 2 cats); writing implements; jewelry; comics; and probably things I’m forgetting.

What was the first book you bought for yourself? Do you still have it?
LOL babe, I’m not a sweet young thing. I cannot remember the first book I bought and I have no idea if I have it anymore or not. The first book that enraptured me as a young child was The Phantom Tollbooth

Have you ever bought a book with high expectations and then discovered that it wasn’t able to meet those assumptions?
Of course, but that’s true of all art.

Do you listen to audio-books?
Nope. Not against them, but I need to listen to music to write, including when I’m driving. Audio books mean I cannot “think” and therefore I cannot create. Though I do plan to listen to the audio book for Alexander Outland: Space Pirate by moi writing as G.J. Koch again, because the voice artist is amazing, and I’ll need to review it when I get back to working on the next book in that series, Alexander Outland: Space Avenger

Do you have one favorite book genre or do you like variety?
I like a variety. My first love was mystery, then humor, biography/autobiography, horror, science fiction, then fantasy. But I read in all genres.

What book is currently at the top of your wishlist?
To have one of my books hit the New York Times bestseller list. I don’t have a book wishlist otherwise. If I want a book, I buy that book.

How do you organise your books?
I don’t. We are not a neat people. We try, but we do not succeed. In a perfect world, just like in the bookstore, by type and alphabetically by author.

Do you read lots of ebooks or mainly physical books?
Physical, only. Mostly because I work at a computer writing 18 hours a day and I rarely can read a book electronically without wanting to edit it, meaning all enjoyment is gone.

What’s your favorite book?
Touched by an Alien, because it gave me my career. To read that others wrote? Far too many to choose just one.

Which of the books on your bookshelves has the prettiest cover design?
Mine, because Dan dos Santos, Lindsey Look, John Stanko, and Lisa Dovichi are fabulous cover artists.

(Zwartraafje: She  is really telling the truth without any form of exaggerating. Every single bookcover from the Alien-series that I own looks like a work of art.)

More than 1,000. Easily more than 1,000.

What was the last book you bought?
Can’t recall. Something from one of my author friends I’m sure.

Do you still remember which book ensured your love for reading?
Every book, even the ones I didn’t like.

Who was your favorite author when you were a child?
O. Henry and Arthur Conan Doyle, followed closely by Madeleine L’engle.

From which author do you own the most books?
Terry Pratchett (though I’m starting to catch up to him :-D)

Which book have you read more than three times?
All of Pratchett’s first 20 or so Discworldbooks, Good Omens, all of Sherlock HolmesChips off the Old BenchleyO. Henry, the Phantom Tollbooth,A Wrinkle in Time. More than this, I’m sure. I’m a very fast reader and if I love it I re-read it.

Have you ever finished reading a book when you would’ve preferred to give up?
Nope. I don’t read anything that doesn’t make me want to go on. For example, I’ve never read Tolkien because I cannot stand his writing style. Same with Larry McMurtry. And I think both are geniuses, but I can’t read their work.

If it were possible to choose a fictitious gadget from a book ? What would you choose and why? (Zwartraafje –> For example: Mine would be a Timeturner (J.K.Rowling) so I can produce some extra reading time)
I don’t want a gadget – I want a superpower and from my own series. I want hyperspeed, because I need it. LOL

Is there any chance you would come to a con in Belgium?
If a con would pay to bring me I’d be there in a New York Minute. My one trip to Europe we got to spend only an afternoon in Belgium and I’d love to get to actually see more than one beautiful little town with a great bakery. Sadly, I cannot afford to go to Europe on my own dime. But I would love to go to European cons, so put out the word! 😀

A while ago I voted for your books to get a movie-adaptation. If that would happen ? do you have any actors in mind to play your characters?
There’s the author response and the business response. The business response is: Whoever would open the movie strong and ensure that it had legs. The author response is: It varies depending on who fits at the time. Check out my Pinterest page  for who I currently see playing whom. (Zwartraafje: I just did and some of the actors really match with what I had in mind while reading. Tito for example, but Kevin, The Gower-family, Kitty, Chuckie and reader as well. Oh and my favorite … the actor she prefers to play Malcolm Buchanon.)

What part of the writing process is your favorite? The beginning where you are composing the storyline and introduce new characters or the end where all loose ends are nicely coming together?
All of it. I love writing. I even love editing. If forced to choose, though, probably when I go, “AHA! THAT’S what’s going on!” Which is usually somewhere in the middle. LOL

What book are you reading right now?
Right now I’m reading comics, catching up on DC’s Rebirth titles. I have, sadly, very little time to read anymore, due to deadlines, of which I happily have many. Otherwise, I’m behind on Seanan McGuire’s October Day series from DAW Books, which I love, and I want to get caught up on that. In that copious spare time I don’t have. (But if you haven’t read that series, you need to get it.)

(Zwartraafje: While I was doing some research for an older blogpost about the favorite books of my favorite authors I discovered the October Day series. Earlier this year I bought the first book. So I’m on my way. Still need to find some time to read the book though.)
